Get Help Freezing Your Rent with SCRIE or DRIE

Rent increases can make it difficult to afford to stay in your home. Access Justice Brooklyn can help eligible older adults and people with disabilities apply for New York City’s rent freeze programs, which can protect you from certain rent increases and help make your housing more affordable and stable.

What are SCRIE and DRIE?

SCRIE (Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption) and DRIE (Disability Rent Increase Exemption) are New York City programs that can help eligible tenants keep their rent from increasing due to certain rent increases.

Access Justice Brooklyn provides free legal assistance to qualifying Brooklyn residents who need help applying for these programs.

Who may qualify?

You may qualify for SCRIE if you are 62 or older. You may qualify for DRIE if you are 18 or older and have a qualifying disability.

Generally, you must:

  • Be 62 or older, or 18 or older with a qualifying disability
  • If applying for DRIE, provide documentation of your qualifying disability
  • Live in a rent-stabilized, rent-controlled, Mitchell-Lama, or HDFC apartment
  • Be named on the lease and able to provide a signed copy of your lease
  • Have an annual household income of $50,000 or less
  • Pay more than one-third of your monthly household income toward rent

Eligibility requirements can be complicated, and meeting some of these requirements does not necessarily mean you will qualify. Our team can help you understand the program requirements and determine whether you may be eligible.

If you think you may qualify, you can start an online intake here. If you prefer to speak with staff directly, our intake hours are Monday through Thursday between 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Please call (718) 624-3894 or email us at help@accessjusticebk.org.

Access Justice Brooklyn is committed to helping Brooklyn residents understand their rights and access the resources they need to remain safely and affordably housed.
